L-glutamine supplementation reduces gastrointestinal permeability and biomarkers of physiological stress in preweaning Holstein heifer calves

چکیده
L-glutamine supplementation improves gastrointestinal and immune function in dairy calves during controlled stress challenges. However, it is unknown whether supplementing milk replacer (MR) with preweaning calf health welfare under production conditions. Therefore, the study objective was to evaluate effects of MR on permeability, function, growth performance, postabsorptive metabolic biomarkers, physiological response calves. In 3 repetitions, Holstein heifer (n = 30; 1.5 ± 0.5 d old; 37.1 0.86 kg body weight) were blocked by serum total protein, weight, age, provided (3.8 L/calf per d; 24% CP, 17% fat, 12.5% solids) supplemented (GLN; 10g/kg powder; n 5 calves/repetition) or nonsupplemented (NSMR; calves/repetition). Calves individually housed ad libitum starter grain water access until weaning (56.4 old). At 1 6 wk urinary catheters placed, orally dosed L chromium (Cr)-EDTA. Urine samples collected over a 24-h period for Cr output analysis as an vivo biomarker permeability. Blood 1, 5, 7, 14, 21, 42, 56 measure white blood cell counts, cortisol, insulin, glucose, nonesterified fatty acids, amyloid A, haptoglobin, neutrophil: lymphocyte. Two intervals used statistical analyzes representing greater (P1; 1–3) reduced (P2; 4–8) enteric disease susceptibility. Data analyzed using PROC GLIMMIX SAS 9.4 experimental unit. Overall, GLN versus NSMR Total at age calves, but no differences detected age. Neutrophil: lymphocyte decreased both overall P2 neutrophil counts tended be P2. No treatment average daily feed intake, gain, measurements, scores, therapeutic treatments between summary, permeability biomarkers

Lactoferrin supplementation to Holstein calves during the preweaning and postweaning phases.
Sixty Holstein calves (30 bulls, 30 heifers) were used to examine the effects of supplemental lactoferrin on feed intake, growth, and health during the preweaning and postweaning periods. One of 3 levels of lactoferrin was supplemented from 3 to 56 d in either whole milk or water to produce 3 dietary treatments: 1) 0 g/d, 2) 0.5 g/d, and 3) 1 g/d. Whole milk (3.8 L/d) containing lactoferrin sup...
متن کاملEffects of oral glutamine supplementation on exercise-induced gastrointestinal permeability and tight junction protein expression.
The objectives of this study are threefold: 1) to assess whether 7 days of oral glutamine (GLN) supplementation reduces exercise-induced intestinal permeability; 2) whether supplementation prevents the proinflammatory response; and 3) whether these changes are associated with upregulation of the heat shock response. On separate occasions, eight human subjects participated in baseline testing an...
متن کاملL-Theanine reduces psychological and physiological stress responses.
L-Theanine is an amino acid contained in green tea leaves which is known to block the binding of L-glutamic acid to glutamate receptors in the brain. Because the characteristics of L-Theanine suggest that it may influence psychological and physiological states under stress, the present study examined these possible effects in a laboratory setting using a mental arithmetic task as an acute stres...
متن کاملEffect of protected-glutamine supplementation on performance, milk composition and some blood metabolites in fresh Holstein cows
The present study was conducted to study the effect of protected-glutamine (Gln) supplementation on dry matter intake (DMI), milk yield (MY) and composition, somatic cell counts (SCC) and blood parameters in fresh cows. Forty Holstein cows at zero day of parturition (calving day = day 0) were divided into four groups (n=10), and fed (ad libitum) with one of the diets including: basal d...
متن کاملOxidative stress and protein catabolism following dexamethasone and isoflupredone administration in Holstein calves
Background: Glucocorticoids have several benefits in large animal medicine but apart from their benefits, there are several disadvantages attributed to the use of these drugs. Among the disadvantages, disturbance in protein metabolism is one of the side effects of glucocorticoids which has been investigated in human and laboratory animals. OBJECTIVES: There are no information regarding the effe...
